When I started making knives, this is one of the first books I read, and I would highly recommend it to any beginner. It is a relatively complete introduction to the craft - covering everything from the layout of your workspace to pattern welded blades to blade finishing to simple instructions on how to build a coal forge. Dr. Hrisoulas distills a rather complex subject into a clear and concise book, although he does make forge welding sound much simpler than it actually is. You can view some of the authors work at

This is Dr. Hrisoulas' second book, and even considering all the great things I had to say about his first book, this one is even better. It is a more complete reference than "The Complete Bladesmith". If you were only able to buy one of the knifemaking books on this page, this is the one to get.
